2017 World Championship Top 8 Decks

The 2017 World Championships are coming to an end. With all of the grueling competition, here are the Top 8 performing decks in the Masters Division that appeared at this year’s ultimate tournament.

Top 8 Deck Summary

This year the majority of the best decks have a single Pokemon in common: Garbodor!

Of the Top 8 decks, 6 feature Garbodor (including 1 with Drampa-GX, 3 with Espeon-GX, 1 with Golisopod-GX and Drampa-GX, and 1 with Golisopod-GX), and 2 feature Gardevoir-GX and Gallade.

Interestingly enough, all of these decks feature Pokemon that will continue to be included in the upcoming 2018 Standard Format. These decks will of course still lose cards such as VS Seeker, Hex Maniac, and Teammates. 1 deck also included a Flareon from Ancient Origins to add the Fire type to the Stage 1 attacker.

Diego Cassiraga’s Gardevoir-GX / Gallade

Argentina

Finalist

Diego plays a 3-1 split of Gardevoir-GX and Gallade in this Gardevoir deck, along him to make use of Gallade’s Premontion ability as well as use him as a decent non-EX/GX attacker with Sensitive Blade. To easily set up his Stage 2 Pokemon, Diego plays both Alolan Vulpix for Beacon and Diancie to evolve 1 Pokemon immediately.

The Gallade is able to take surprise prizes with only a DCE, dealing 150 damage to Pokemon-EX (but not Pokemon-GX), and 180 with Choice Band. Gallade’s Premonition ability works perfectly with Octillery’s Abyssal Hand. Diego also runs a single copy of Hex Maniac and Acerola.

Reiji Nishiguchi’s Espeon-GX / Garbodor

Japan

Reiji is playing a twist on the classic Garbodor deck, instead choosing to use a single Espeon-GX over Drampa-GX. Reiji has also included a Tapu Koko promo and a Necrozma-GX–whose powerful GX attack can deal 100 damage to each of his opponent’s Pokemon-EX and -GX. Reiji has even included a single copy of the Evolutions Mewtwo as a surprise single-prize attacker.

Reiji’s also included a single copy of Acerola, Teammates, and Ninja Boy, along with a pair of Enhanced Hammers.

Sam Chen’s Drampa-GX / Garbodor

United States

Sam’s deck goes pure with a classic Drampa-GX and Garbodor variant, along with 1 Garbotoxin Garbodor. This deck includes 4 Rainbow Energy to also ensure damage on the Bench to power up Drampa’s Beserk attack.

Sam has also decided to include a single copy of Acerola, Teammates, and Plumeria for disruption.

Xander Pero’s Espeon-GX / Garbodor

United States

Xander’s Garbodor deck has departed from the typical Drampa-GX variant, instead choosing Espeon-GX along with Flareon from Ancient Origins–this single copy of Flareon adds the Fire type to all of his Stage 1 attackers, making quick work out of Decidueye-GX, Vileplume, Metagross-GX, and others.

Relying on the Psychic-weak Espeon-GX in a format full of Garbodors is also very risky. Because this deck doesn’t have any Drampa-GX, Xander doesn’t run any Rainbow energy and therefore is less vulnerable to Enhanced Hammer and Drampa’s Righteous Edge. Xander also plays 1 Hex Maniac, 1 Teammates, and 1 Parallel City.

Jimmy also includes a copy of Teammates and Parallel City.

Sho Sasaki’s Golisopod-GX / Drampa-GX / Garbodor

Japan

Sho is running a very interesting deck with a varied team of attackers. This deck includes a 3-3 line of Golispod-GX in addition to a single Trashalanche Garbodor and 2 Garbotoxin Garbodors, 2 Tapu Koko promos, 1 Drampa-GX, and a Magearna-EX for her Mystic Heart ability.

Golisopod is obviously this deck’s main attacker and uses Garbodor mainly to shut off abilities. If Sho’s opponent uses too many items, they can be easily punished with the Trashalanche Garbodor. Drampa-GX can also be used as an attacker to hit for up to 180 damage or to discard a special energy. Tapu Koko can spread damage, softening up opponents to make up for Golisopod’s relatively low damage potential.

Sho also runs 1 copy of Teammates and 1 Multiswitch. This deck has only 2 Grass energies, along with 4 Rainbow and 4 DCEs.

Naoto Suzuki’s Golisopod-GX / Garbodor

Japan

Finalist

Naoto’s Golisopod deck is also very similar to Sho Suzuki’s deck, minus the Drampa-GX, a fourth Wimpod and an extra Grass energy.

Naoto also runs a very helpful but not-often-seen Heavy Ball, which can retrieve any Pokemon with a retreat cost of 3 or more, including a Wimpod, Golisopod, or Garbodor.

Naoto also runs 1 copy of Teammates, 1 Hex Maniac, and only 1 copy of Field Blower…

Pablo Meza’s Gardevoir-GX / Gallade

Mexico

Pablo’s Gardevoir-GX runs 3 Gardevoir-GX and 1 Gallade, just like Diego’s deck. However, Pablo runs a skimp 1-1 line of Octillery and a single Diancie to help evolve those Ralts and Kirlia, but no Alolan Vulpix.

Pablo’s deck also includes a large number of 1-of supporters, including single copies of Guzma, Lysandre, Teammates, Hex Maniac, and Fisherman.
