(XY-Evolutions)– Sun & Moon –(Guardians Rising)

Sun & Moon Set Details

The first expansion set of the new Sun & Moon Era was released on February 3, 2017 (US) and on December 9, 2016 (Japan).

This expansion set will be the first to use Generation 7 Pokemon from the Alola region, as well as Alolan Forms of Kanto Pokemon from Generation 1. Sun & Moon also introduce the Pokemon GX mechanic.

Theme Decks: Forest Shadow, Roaring Heat, Bright Tide

Sun & Moon will include three new Theme Decks: Forest Shadow, Roaring Heat, and Bright Tide.

The Forest Shadow Theme Deck will feature Rowlett and its evolutions Dartrix and Decidueye and focus on the Grass type.

The Roaring Heat Theme Deck will feature Litten and its evolutions Torracat and Incineroar and focus on the Fire and Fighting types.

Finally, the Bright Tide Theme Deck feature Popplio and its evolutions Brionne and Primarina and focus on the Water and Lighting types.

Collection Sun and Collection Moon (Japan)

Collection Sun Collection Moon Booster

The Sun & Moon Base Set will be based on Collection Sun (SM1S) & Collection Moon (SM1M), two companion sets that will be released in Japan. Both Collections contain 60 cards each in Japan, in addition to some Ultra Rare, Secret Rare, and “Hyper Rare” cards.

Cards from the Sun & Moon Starter Set Decks (Japan) will also be included in the Sun & Moon Base Set (English).

New Rarity: “Hyper Rare”

In Japan, card rarity has always been a little different than that in the US, but a new card rarity was introduced in Japan’s Collection Sun & Collection Moon: “Hyper Rare”. Currently 8 cards are given the “Hyper Rare” rarity in Collection Sun/Moon: Lurantis GX, Lapras GX, Espeon GX, Lunala GX, Umbreon GX, Solgaleo GX, Tauros GX, and Gumshoos GX.

Japan now has the following rarities for Pokemon Cards in Collection Sun and Collection Moon:

  • C (Common)
  • U (Uncommon)
  • R (Rare)
  • RR (Rare Holo in US, including Regular Art Pokemon GX)
  • SR (Secret Rare; Full Art Pokemon/Supporters in US)
  • UR (Ultra Rare; Secret Rare cards in US)
  • HR (Hyper Rare; all new rarity)

Sun & Moon Starter Set Decks (Japan)

Another subset of Sun & Moon was revealed, perhaps the “Sun & Moon: Alola Starter Set” (SMA) in Japan, containing 59 cards which are included in 3 Starter GX Decks, featuring Decidueye GX: Starter Set Grass, Incineroar GX: Starter Set Fire, and Primarina GX: Starter Set Water.

The cards in the Sun & Moon Starter Set Decks include the evolution lines of Rowlett, Litten, and Popplio, as well as the Hau Supporter card, and item cards such as Poke Ball, Great Ball, Ultra Ball (regular print), and Pokemon Catcher that weren’t included in Japan’s Collection Sun or Collection Moon.

The Sun & Moon mascot Pokemon in the TCG are Solgaleo GX and Lunala GX.

New Mechanic: Pokemon GX

Pokemon GX are similar to Pokemon-EX in that they are stronger and have higher HP than their non-GX counterparts. Similarly, when knocked out your opponent may take 2 prize cards instead of one. Unlike Pokemon-EX, Pokemon GX are not all Basic Pokemon.

Pokemon GX also feature a GX attack, which can vary from a very powerful attack to a support move, which can allow the player to attach multiple energy cards. GX attacks can only be used once per game. That is, out of all of a player’s Pokemon GX, only one can use a GX attack a single time. Once a GX attack has been used, that player cannot use any GX attack again for the remainder of the match. Cards like Pokemon Ranger do not stop this limitation; this is a game mechanic and not an attack effect.

Pokemon GX seems to replace Mega Evolution with the standard evolution. For instance, Lurantis GX is a Stage 1 Pokemon that evolves from the Basic (non-GX) Pokemon Fomatis. Your turn does not end when evolving into a Pokemon GX. It is currently not known if Pokemon GX can evolve into even more powerful Pokemon GX.

Further, it seems that Pokemon GX will also entirely replace Pokemon-EX, M Pokemon-EX, and Pokemon BREAK.

Cards in Sun & Moon Base Set

The Sun & Moon Base Set (English) includes cards from Japan’s Collection Sun, Collection Moon, and the Starter Set Decks.

There are 149 regular-numbered cards in the set (Caterpie is number 1/149), with some cards that have even higher numbers. As is tradition, some cards in this set have a card number greater than the official number of cards listed including 4 Secret Rare item cards, and 10 cards that have a new rarity, “Hyper Rare” (as called in Japan, English rarity name may be different).

Below is a breakdown of each card in the English Set.

This brings the total number of cards in Sun & Moon Base Set to 163!

Interestingly, there doesn’t seem to be a listing of regular-print Basic Energy cards, as is customary with every new generation’s Base Set.

Only the Basic Energy cards Psychic and Metal are included as the new Secret Rare cards (“UR” in Japan), likely as an hommage to this set’s mascots, the Psychic-type Lunala GX and the Metal-type Solgaleo GX.

Also of note, this set doesn’t contain any Stadium cards nor any reprints of the staple Supporter cards like N (“Each player shuffles their hand into their deck and draws a card for each of his/her remaining Prize cards.”) or Professor Sycamore (“Discard your hand and draw 7 cards.”).

Instead this set has the following “draw” Supporter cards:

  • Professor Kukui (“Draw 2 cards. During this turn, your Pokemon’s attacks do 20 more damage to your opponent’s Active Pokemon (before applying Weakness and Resistance).”)
  • Ilima (“Each player shuffles his or her hand into his or her deck. Then, each player flips a coin. If heads, that player draws 6 cards. If tails, that player draws 3 cards.”)
  • Lillie (“Draw cards from your deck until you have 6 cards in your hand. If you used this card on your first turn, draw until you have 8 cards in your hand.”).
  • Hau (“Draw 3 cards.”)
The full set list of the first 149 cards in the English set was leaked early from a posted image on the official Pokemon Center website. The cards after the first 149 (Secret Rare and “Hyper Rare”) aren’t yet confirmed, just speculated as included as they were included in Japan’s Collection Sun and Collection Moon.
