Sun & Moon Set Details

It looks like there’s more news for the upcoming Sun and Moon TCG Series!

First off, we have release dates for both Japan and the US.

The first set for Sun and Moon will launch in Japan on December 9, 2016. Sun and Moon will launch in the US and Europe on February 3, 2017.

The set will feature over 140 cards, including 11 Pokemon GX and 40 new Alolan Pokemon!

Sun & Moon Theme Decks

Next, Theme Decks.

Most sets have featured two Theme Decks. Sun & Moon; however, will bring us THREE new Theme Decks!

Welcome to the tropical Alola region! Choose your first partner – Rowlet, Litten, or Popplio – and begin your journey with three 60-card theme decks, each ready to play right out of the box. Take aim with the Forest Shadow theme deck, add fuel to the fire with the Roaring Heat theme deck, or overwhelm your foe with the Bright Tide theme deck!

That’s right, the new Theme Decks are:

  • Forest Shadow (featuring Rowlett)
  • Roaring Heat (featuring Litten)
  • Bright Tide (featuring Popplio)

I don’t know about everyone else, but I sure do like collecting Theme Decks!

Pokemon GX, EXs, Mega Evolution, and Pokemon BREAK

Including the previously announced Soglaleo GX, Lunala GX, and the recently revealed Lurantis GX, there will be 11 Pokemon GX with the first Sun & Moon set! (Snorlax GX will be released as a Promo card, not included here).

Also, with the reveal of Lurantis GX, it seems that Pokemon GX are not limited to Basic Pokemon. Lurantis seems to be a Stage 1 Pokemon… Pokemon GX aren’t quite the same as Pokemon-EX with an uber-attack…

Sun & Moon will also feature about 40 new Alolan Pokemon (including new Alolan Form Pokemon from the previous 6 generations).

No Mention of Pokemon-EX, Megas, or BREAKs

However, no new Pokemon-EX, Mega Pokemon-EX, or Pokemon BREAK have been announced. Does this mean that Pokemon-GX will replace -EXs, Megas, and BREAKs?

It seems unlikely that with 11 Pokemon-GX that any more “ultra rare” cards like EXs, Megas, and BREAKs will be included. It also seems odd that Mega Evolution and BREAK evolution haven’t been discussed with the new set.

As an aside, for the the new Sun & Moon video games, it seems that while Mega Evolution will be included in the game, it will not be allowed in tournament play. Interesting… could this be the end for Mega Evolution? But what of Pokemon BREAK?

Other players have been speculating on Reddit that Dual-Type Pokemon may also be discontinued. Say it isn’t so! (As a Rainbow Road-fan, I love the new Dual-Type Pokemon in Steam Siege!)

Below are the details and images we have for the 4 known Pokemon GX.

Luranits GX

Luranits GX was a huge surprise when it was revealed. First, it dispelled the notion that all Pokemon GX would be Basic Pokemon. Instead, Lurantis GX is a Stage 1 Pokemon that evolves from Fomatis (a Basic, non-GX Pokemon). It’s HP is also quite high, at 210. Clearly above most Pokemon-EX, and at the Mega Pokemon-EX level.

Does this mean that Mega Pokemon-EX (and their Spirit Links) are coming to an end?

Also helpful to remember is that Lurantis GX (and Fomatis) are Grass type Pokemon, so you can use Forest of Giant Plants to evolve it right away.

[G] Flower Supply: 40 damage.
Attach 2 basic Energy from your discard pile to your Pokemon in any way you like.

This attack does 50 damage times the number of [G] Energy attached to this Pokemon.
(You can’t use more than 1 GX attack a game.)

When your Pokemon-GX is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.

Weakness: Fire (x2) | Resistance: none | Retreat: 2

Update: added information about Lurantis GX and it being a Stage 1 Pokemon with Mega -EX level HP. Could this be the end of Mega Pokemon, too?
