Tsareena-GX: Is it Worth It?
With any Pokemon TCG Product, it’s important to see if it’s a worthwhile purchase. Are you spending too much money for what you’re getting, or is it a great purchase?
The Tsareena-GX Box retails for $29.99 (USD). The Box includes 1 Tsareena-GX, 1 Jumbo Tsareena-GX card, 4 boosters packs, and an online code.
- The Tsareena-GX promo card retails by itself for about $3.99 on eBay.
- Jumbo cards are hard to price, as they’re for collectors, but this jumbo card is selling for the same $3.99 price.
- The PTCGO Code card for most of these boxes retail for about $1.50
- Individual booster packs retail for $3.99 each (4 x $3.99 = $15.96)
Total value (at max retail prices): $29.43
If you’re buying this product at its full retail of $29.99, I’d say it’s an OK purchase–you’re getting what you’re paying for. However, many times you can get similar products for a fair amount below MSRP. If you can find this Tsareena-GX Box for less than $29.99, it’s a great buy.
In fact, you can get the Tsareena-GX Box on Amazon with free shipping for as little as $16.88! That’s almost half off! (This price isn’t guaranteed, as prices on Amazon change regularly. Price checked on 08/23/2017.) You can also get a similar price for Tsareena-GX on eBay.
Tsareena-GX and Playability
Tsareena-GX is a Stage 2 Grass-type Pokemon-GX. It has a decent 230 HP (same as Gardevoir-GX).
Tsareena’s first attack for a single Grass energy, Side Eye, switches one of your opponent’s Benched Pokemon with their Active Pokemon, and that Pokemon is now Confused.
Tsareena’s second attack, Jumping Side Kick, for a Grass energy and a DCE, does 90+ damage. If your opponent’s Active Pokemon is also confused, then this attack does 90 more damage, for 180 total!
Finally, Tsareena’s GX attack, Queen’s Command GX, forces your opponent to discard 4 cards from their hand!
Normally a Pokemon-GX that has a powerful attack like Jumping Side Kick, has a downside, such as discarding energy or not being able to attack the following turn. Tsareena’s attack has no downside, but requires your opponent to be confused to do the maximum damage.
Tsareena’s first attack can help setup a Confused Pokemon, especially if your opponent has a Benched Pokemon with a high retreat cost. Unfortunately, it’s relatively simple for your opponent to have the special condition removed, with cards like Switch, Escape Rope, Guzma, Olympia, Acerola, Float Stone, Pokemon Center Lady, Big Malasada, and others.
A couple cards you could combo with Tsareena to ensure Confusion (besides Tsareena’s first attack), is Haunter and Parallel City! Simply throw up a Parallel City to make your Pokemon immune to Confusion, then evolve a Benched Gastly into Haunter and choose to leave both Active Pokemon Confused (with yours immune)! Then use Tsareena’s Juming Side Kick to do the max 180 damage (210 with Choice Band!).
While I don’t think Tsareena-GX will be necessarily a top-tier deck, it can certainly be powerful and your opponents may not expect it. Even if you can’t manage to regularly inflict Confusion, you can still do 90 damage (120 with Choice Band) each turn. At least Tsareena-GX is tanky enough to last a hit or two. Also, Confusion is one of the more annoying Special Conditions and your opponent may risk the coin-flip to attack through it–possibly getting 30 more damage.
I still recommend picking up a few copies of this card to try it out yourself!
