Update v2.40 Timeline
Get ready for update version 2.40 coming today!
Update: Maintenance has been delayed one hour…
Update 2: Maintenance is now underway and the game is currently offline as of 10:00 AM PDT/1:00 PM EDT.
Update 3: Maintenance is now complete and the game is live!
First, here’s the timeline for the update today:
- 7:30 AM PDT (10:30 AM EDT) – Tournaments go offline in preparation for update.
9:00 AM10:00 AM PDT (1:00 PM EDT) – Game offline for update maintenance.
- 1:00 PM PDT (4:00 PM EDT) – Game back online!
This means that by 1:00 PM PDT (4:00 PM EDT) the game should be back online with all the new update features–and the Evolutions set–live!
Evolutions Set Details
Keep in mind that although the Evolutions Set will be live, you
won’t be able to open booster packs, Theme Decks, or get either from the in-game Shop.
Update: Apparently you can open booster packs! Here’s a snapshot of my first Evolutions pack. (Not too good, but a Reverse Foil DCE is always nice!
You will; however, be able to redeem codes for Evolutions Prelease Boxes, Theme Decks, Elite Trainer Boxes, Booster Packs, and trade them!
Evolutions Pack Value
The initial value of any set is always high, although this set will probably taper off to slightly above normal after the first day or so. I’d still wager that the value of XY-Evolutions will be higher than packs of Steam Siege.
After the update today, Evolutions packs will be the de-facto main currency. Roaring Skies packs will still be valued higher due to their scarcity (and the cards they contain), but Evolutions will still be the default trading currency.
Cards in Evolutions
There are a handful of good cards in Evolutions, notably Mewtwo, Charizard, Dragonite-EX (regular art and Full Art), Brock’s Grit (regular art and Full Art), Starmie BREAK, Machamp BREAK, Ninetales BREAK, the Kanto starters’ Spirit Links, and much more.
It’s a good idea to stock up on Evolutions boosters while you can, especially for trades.
Getting Evolutions Packs In-Game
Keep in mind that the current Versus Ladder will still give Steam Siege boosters.
This won’t change until the ladder resets next Thursday, November 10, at 5:00 PM PST (8:00 PM EST) (Note: Daylight Savings Time ends before then, on Sunday, November 6 in the US).
For Daily Login Bonus and the rare, 3-XP Daily Challenges, expect Evolutions boosters to be included starting on November 2.
Evolutions packs will be the reward for Tournaments in the Theme, Standard, and Expanded Formats. The usual rewards for “random boosters” will also be replaced with all Evolutions boosters for the first 2-3 weeks after release. I expect this to take effect on the official launch on November 2.
This means that instead of earning 3 Steam Siege boosters and 3 random boosters for getting 1st place in an 8-Ticket Tournament, you’ll instead get 6 Evolutions boosters!
For the Theme Format 4-Ticket boosters, you’ll get 3 Evolutions boosters for 1st place instead of 2 Steam Siege and 1 random one.
Sweet deal! So, save your tickets until the Tournament Rewards have changed!
Remember that after the first 2-3 weeks of the launch, random boosters will be brought back into the rewards.
Getting Evolutions PTCGO Codes
I’ve curated a list of some of the best ways to get Evolutions codes fast–ideally by email message and not through snail-mail shipping.
Currently, the best prices are on eBay (as well as being one of the few places to get codes right away).
These offers won’t be around for long, and I expect them to sell out in 24-48 hours (or sooner).
Update 11/4: As the previous eBay items sold out, here’s a fresh round of more Evolutions items.
Small Budget? The best value is currently 59 cents per code, 10 at a time.
XY-Evolutions codes for $0.59 each (x10 for $5.95) – Emailed
Medium Budget? Another great deal offers 36 Evolutions codes for 55 cents each!
XY-Evolutions codes for $0.55 each (x36 for $19.99) – Emailed
Bigger Budget? Want the best deal? This post is offering 100 packs for only 44 cents each! Keep in mind this listing is mailed out, not emailed.
XY-Evolutions codes for $0.44 each (x100 for $44.99) – Mailed
Keep in mind that these offers all email the codes (through eBay Messages, also sent to your email), so you don’t have to wait until they’re mailed out.
You also have eBay and PayPal Purchase Protection, so if something doesn’t go right and the seller won’t help, you’re still covered.
Update v2.40 Changes
There are several main changes coming with this update, including a refresh of the Trainers Challenge, a redesign of the Versus Ladder, new Theme Deck features, and many bug fixes.
The Trainers Challenge is being updated to become more in-line with the changes to the Tutorial in update 2.39.
Most notably is that the “point system” for earning stars has been removed. This change is to make the Trainers Challenge “simpler”. Now, just beat a Trainer with a different Theme Deck to earn a star.
Also gone is the difficulty setting. Now each Trainer gets progressively more difficult with each star, up to 4.
To summarize the rewards:
- 4-star a trainer for a random, locked booster pack
- 4-star each trainer in a league for 3 more random, locked booster packs
- Win 7 times with a provided Theme Deck (Crushing Current, Hidden Depths, Born of Fire) to fully unlock it.
- Win 12 times with other Theme Decks (redeemed with code or bought from Shop) for a locked booster pack from that set’s expansion.
Remember that your progress will carry over from before. Also, if you’ve already earned the locked booster packs from the Trainers Challenge, you won’t be able to earn them again here.
The update to the Versus Ladder is a contentious one.
Instead of displaying a long ladder of rewards that has to “scroll” (and can add a lengthy animation after each game), the versus ladder will be shown as three separate parts. Each part can be viewed by clicking a small tab-like button, showing one, two, or three stars–after you’ve earned enough points.
When you earn enough Versus Points to move up the ladder, the next section will be unlocked.
Obviously, a “pro” to this change is that it will reduce the animation after a match, where you would have to wait until the Versus Ladder scrolled through to where you were. This may also benefit players who may be too “intimidated” to tackle the Versus Ladder by making it more approachable.
However, now players won’t be able to quickly see the higher-tier rewards until they’ve earned enough Versus Points.
Theme Deck Unlocking and Trading
Theme Decks will now be “opened” automatically when you get them for the first time. Before this update, you had to go to your “Collection” and manually open them (like a booster pack) to have the Theme Deck available to play. If you obtain multiple copies of the same Theme Deck, only the first one will be opened automatically.
Unopened and unlocked Theme Decks may also be traded in public and private trades with this update.
Remember that only items redeemed with a code from a physical product (or from the Shop using Gems in Canada) are able to be traded. If you buy a Theme Deck with tokens, it’s locked and is never able to be traded.
Combined with the Auto-Open feature you’ll have to remember that if you want to be able to trade your Theme Deck that you redeemed from a physical code, you’ll first need to buy one from the Shop using tokens. That way you’ll have a locked version for your collection and can trade the second, unopened and unlocked copy.
There’s a slew of bug fixes slated to be included with this update.
Most notable is the Volcanion-EX bug, which was recently banned as players were able to use Volcanic Heat more than they should.
Other bug fixes include:
- Magearna-EX: Mewtwo-EX’s Damage Change has no effect when Magearna-EX’s ability is in use.
- Flareon/Jolteon/Vaporeon (AOR): Ancient Trait “Theta Stop” Pokemon do not receive the additional Fire/Lightning/Water type from these Pokemon’s abilities (Golurk).
- Exp. Share: does not function correctly when multiple copies are in play.
- Clawitzer: “Mega Boost” is not properly disabled when the opponent uses Giratina-EX’s Chaos Wheel.
- Yveltal: the Fright Night ability is not always removed when Yveltal is moved to the Bench.
- …and more. Read the full forum post.
